2010 National Minimum Wage rates announced
25th June 2010
Following the recommendations in the Low Pay Commission’s (LPC) 2010 report the Coalition Government has now confirmed the new increased minimum wage rates, which will come into force on 1 October 2010.
New National Minimum Wage rates:
- £5.80 to £5.93 an hour for workers aged 21 and over
- £4.83 to £4.92 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20
- £3.57 to £3.64 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17
However, no hint was given as to whether the national minimum wage would be increased in subsequent years.
The increase was originally announced by Alistair Darling in his final Budget on 25 March 2010. The adult rate will increase by 13 pence, or 2.2%, to £5.93 per hour from its current rate of £5.80 per hour.
Apprentice minimum wage - £2.50 per hour
For the first time there will also be a single apprentice minimum wage rate of £2.50 an hour.
The Low Pay Commission proposed to the government a minimum wage of £2.50 per hour for apprentices, which has been accepted and applies to:
- apprentices aged 19 and over, but in the first year of their apprenticeship.
Employers are responsible for ensuring they are paying the right rate to each worker and make changes effective from 1 October 2010.
