Oldham: The Land of Construction Opportunities
6th May 2010
Over 150 representatives from Oldham’s construction industry attended the latest Oldham Construction Sector Group meeting at the Bower Hotel in Chadderton yesterday, to hear about the latest news and opportunities open to the borough’s construction firms.
The event, the third in the series of construction events run by Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, was the largest so far and attracted representatives from architectural firms, stonemasons, restoration experts, plus electrical, lighting and roofing contractors and many others with an interest in the sub-contracting work available in the Oldham borough over the coming months.
Representatives from Willmott Dixon, who have been appointed by Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council to construct three new Academies in the borough, gave the main presentation and appealed for assistance from local firms with knowledge and experience of building in the area. They outlined what they would expect from any companies wishing to join them in the projects and stated that they could offer favourable payment terms, development plans in place for anyone involved in the supply chain, plus the possibility of repeat business.
Commenting on the meeting, Paul Roberts, Oldham President of Greater Manchester Chamber, said:
“This is one of the largest events of its kind in the North West and is pioneering in its objectives. We are bringing those involved in the Oldham construction industry under one roof to hear about business opportunities and to inform them about the public sector procurement process. Interest in the events continues to grow, particularly in the development of a Joint Venture model which would benefit smaller companies unable to tender on their own.”
Joint Venture Opportunities in the Construction Sector
Roger Hinchliffe, Partner at Pearson Hinchliffe, updated attendees on the Joint Venture process and emphasised the importance of the Group in enabling local companies to get involved in local projects. Updates were also provided by Rok plc who at the last event gave information about the £40million of sub-contracting opportunities open to local businesses.
The next meeting of the Oldham Construction Sector Group will take place on Wednesday 4th August at the Bower Hotel. To keep up-to-date with all the Chamber’s events, visit: www.gmchamber.co.uk/events
