Solicitor Conducts BBC Interview …from a Greek Beach
7th June 2010
Press Release: Monday, 07 June 2010
A Corporate partner at Pearson Hinchliffe Commercial Law was last week asked by BBC Radio Manchester to take part in an impromptu interview about Government spending cuts – from his sea-side hotel in Greece.
The interview, with presenter Allan Beswick, was conducted via mobile phone while Roger Hinchliffe holidayed with his family on the island of Skiathos. It came about due to his leading role in Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s Oldham Construction Sector – an alliance of companies who are working to counter the effects of the recession.
School Investment in Peril
The radio discussion concerned the new Coalition Government’s plans to cut back on the Building Schools for the Future programme (BSF) – Labour’s flagship £55bn plan to build and refurbish secondary schools in England by 2020.
Roger explained during GMR’s Beswick on Breakfast programme that the proposed spending review could significantly affect the £230m allocated to Oldham’s schools. He later said: “Not only does this concern pupils and parents, but local contractors in the construction industry supply chain who were looking forward to winning Council contracts.”
Roger, who is also a previous Chairman of the local Chamber, was not daunted by the BBC’s invitation to comment on the economic effects of the proposed cuts despite being 1,500 miles away.
“I received a call from my marketing manager at the firm informing me the BBC would like to do an interview at 7 O’clock the next morning. As Greece is 2 hours ahead of the UK and being in ‘holiday mode’, I must say, I was glad of the time difference. But of course, I was pleased to take part in such an important discussion.”
Spending cuts look certain
The Government’s plans will not come as any surprise as it seeks to make cuts to the annual £8.5bn new schools budget. Mr Hinchliffe added: “It won’t stop school building already commenced, but the future looks bleak for any new projects getting off the ground.”
A Department for Education spokesman said a decision had still to be made on BSF funding. “The government is committed to a full comprehensive spending review in the autumn and ministers will shortly be considering spending priorities in all areas, including school capital.”
Roger concluded: “We all now know and accept we are headed for more austere times in terms of public spending. Oldham’s construction industry has been particularly hard-hit by the recession so we are urging the Government to be mindful of hampering the pace of economic recovery as it attempts to reduce the fiscal deficit.”
