Sunday Trading (London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) Bill

16th April 2012

The Sunday Trading (London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) Bill had its first reading in Parliament on 28 March 2012. It will suspend restrictions on Sunday trading hours for eight weeks from 22 July to the end of the Paralympic Games on 9 September. During this period, shops with a floor space of more than 280 square metres will not have any restrictions on Sunday opening hours.

However, the Bill does not remove the restrictions on loading and unloading at large shops on Sunday mornings. It also does not amend sections 45 and 101 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, which give specific rights to shop and betting workers to refuse to work on Sundays.

The government will hold discussions before the Bill's second reading in the House of Lords on 24 April with the Opposition, retailers, employers’ groups and unions, to table a government amendment to ensure the protection of shop workers. The Bill is expected to be fast-tracked through Parliament to receive Royal Assent at the beginning of May. This proposed suspension will apply in England and Wales only.
